Life In The Body
News and Notes for the : Shelbyville Church of Christ July 18, 2010
Life In The Body A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package. "What food might this contain?", the mouse wondered. He was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap. Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed this warning : "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!" The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, "Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it." The mouse turned to the pig and told him, "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!" The pig sympathized, but said, "I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray.. Be assured you are in my prayers." The mouse turned to the cow and said, "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!" The cow said, "Wow, Mr. Mouse. I'm sorry for you, but it's no skin off my nose." So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer's mousetrap . . . Alone. … That very night a sound was heard throughout the house -- the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey. The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it. It was a venomous snake whose tail was caught in the trap. The snake bit the farmer's wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital. When she returned home she still had a fever. Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup. So the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient: But his wife's sickness continued. Friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. But, alas, the farmer's wife did not get well... She died. So many people came for her funeral the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them for the funeral luncheon. And the mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness. So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and you think it doesn't concern you, remember --- When one of us is threatened, we are all at risk. We are all involved in this journey called life. We must keep an eye out for one another and make an extra effort to encourage one another. Romans 12: 15 - Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.
Galatians 6: 1-2 Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ. Greatest Force For Change But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love. I Corinthians 13:13 This passage in I Corinthians 13 shows how we can change things when we have the right kind of love. The love that is patient, kind, not jealous, not arrogant, does not act in the wrong way, does not take into account a wrong suffered, rejoices in the truth, bears, believes, hopes and endures through all things. The kind of love God has for us. The Agape ! I heard the Gaither Vocal Band sing a song the other day about love. They sang, “If coal can turn to diamonds, and sand can turn to pearls. If worms can turn into butterflies, then love can turn the world.” When we love like God has called us to love, we can turn the world. It certainly takes faith, and hope to do it, but the greatest force for change is love. Grub Rejoicing Together With Darrell After three grandsons, this week Darrell Shumard’s eldest daughter, Sarah, blessed him with his first granddaughter. Her name is Sophia Dawn Long. She weighed in at 7 lbs. 7 oz. and a trim 21 in. long. Sarah and Sophi are fine; the only one in question is grandpa. Word has it he was grinning so wide he dislocated his jaw. Darrel has vowed to spoil her before she can talk, but it has been my experience that "Grandparents are similar to a piece of string - handy to have around and easily wrapped around the fingers of their grandchildren.". VBS Is Just Around The Corner Our VBS day ( Saturday, July 24, 2010 ) is now just 6 days away. There are posters in store windows and door-hangers all over this side of town. We have ads in the paper and on line. It’s time for that last great push. Contact the grandkids, revisit the neighbor kids. Recruit as many as you can for our VBS. Remember, that which we do for the children, we do for our future and the future of the church. Beg them, coax them, bribe them or whatever it takes to get them into the classrooms, but bring them in to learn of God’s love for them.
Let’s all keep this good work in a prominent places in our personal prayers this week. Let us pray for open hearts, for joyful teachers and for an abundant harvest to the glory of God. Only when each part supplies are we strong.
