Deceitfulness of Riches One day a certain rich man who lived a miserable life visited a local preacher. The preacher took the rich man by the hand and led him to a window. "Look out there," he said. The rich man looked into the street, "What do you see?" asked the preacher. "I see people walking." answered the rich man. Again the preacher took him by the hand and this time led him to a mirror. Now what do you see?" "Now I see myself," the rich man replied. Then the preacher said, "Behold, in the window there is a glass, and in the mirror there is a glass. But the glass of the mirror is covered with a little silver, and no sooner is the silver added than you cease to see others, and you see only yourself." Paul writes, " But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. ... 17 Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. 18 Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed. ( 1 Tim. 6:9-10, 17-19) Speaking of our daily needs Jesus said, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” ( Matt. 6:33 ) You have enough for today, share it and trust Him to provide for tomorrow. |
